Aaron Oden Receives ANCOR Award
March 2009
Dakota Communities is proud to announce that ANCOR, a prominent national disabilities organization, recently named Aaron Oden as Minnesota's Direct Support Professional.
The former All State football legend and star Senior Advocate at the DCI-Kennelly Group Home has built his personal wealth through his service to Michael, a unique individual living with developmental disabilities.
The Direct Support Professionals Recognition Award program was founded by ANCOR in 2007. It acknowledges the humanitarianism of direct support professionals (DSP) who persevere to ensure community inclusion for hundreds of thousands of Americans with intellectual, developmental and other disabilities. Aaron was one of thirty-nine DSPs who received awards as best of the best in their respective states.
"The selection process was very difficult this year as there were so many inspiring, compelling and deserving nominees. I am so very proud that ANCOR recognizes and honors the incredible work done by these professionals," said Renee Pietrangelo, ANCOR CEO.

Aaron has been a team member, leader, friend, and strong advocate at Kennelly since February of 1991. He is Mike's Personal Advocate and friend. When Mike's day program was unable to provide a level of care Mike required, Aaron designed a Day Services at Home service model focusing on Mike's love for animals and his community. Aaron helped Mike through the intense classes required to become a Certified Dog Specialist at the River Valley Humane Society. He supported Mike in giving back by enlisting as a Meals-on-Wheels vol unteer. Mike and Aaron walk dogs and deliver hot meals to elderly people in need every week. Mike was recently recognized by the South Metro Meals-on-Wheels program for his community service.
Because of Aaron 's dedication to supporting Mike in living a meaningful life, Mike is not only improving his exercise, language, and interpersonal skills, he's also a well recognized person in the community. Mike’s newfound celebrity status is more than his day program could ever have offered.
“Working with Mike makes me realize that it is possible to overcome major obstacles and have a happy and successful life. I enjoy working with Mike because of his infectious smile and genuine laugh."

Aaron has been like a big brother to Mike. The pair have visited Las Vegas and San Diego, hiked the Appalachian trail, and camped together throughout Minnesota.
Their time together truly matters to both of them. Anyone can easily see Aaron and Mike are the best example of "the right match" making all the difference.
